A Valiant Fr. Celso Ba Shwe Intervened Protestors and Security Forces

Loikaw City, Myanmar (GNJ): Hundreds of young protestors were marching on the road near the compound of Christ The King Cathedral of Catholic Church. Police forces (about 80 numbers) were blocking the roadway of protestors, awaiting for their closer advancement and police forces were preparing to crack them.

Therefore Loikaw Diocesan Administrator (as the See of bishop is vacant due to the death of Bishop Stephen Tje Phe, Bishop of Loikaw on 17 December 2020), Fr. Ba Shwe and another protestant pastor rushed to the standby police forces begging police forces not to beat and arrest peaceful protestors.

Rev. Father Ba Shwe told a leading police chief that he will try to convince youth to move back to the other direction not to confront you. But the chief said they must stop youth rallies.

So Fr. Ba Shwe told him that he did not want his Church compound to have the same bleeding scenario which happened in Myitkyina Cathedral yesterday.

Amid such appealing attempts of priests, police forces finally fired guns and used stun grenades in an attempt to disperse them.

Loikaw Diocese was officially established on April 22, 1989 with territory taken from the Archdiocese of Taunggyi, consisting of 7 Townships, with the Kayah State, Eastern part of Myanmar.  His Holiness John Paul II erected the diocese of Loikaw and created its first Bishop Msgr. Sotero Phamo from Kayah soil on April 22, 1989.

While Loikaw diocese is waiting for her diocese, Fr. Ba Shwe is elected as Diocesan Administrator by Diocesan Counsellors. The total population of Kayah state is 286627 and Catholic population is 183181 which represents 92% of the whole population. So Kayah state is known as Catholic State in Myanmar.
