Myanmar Catholic Bishops’ Conference plans to open Myanmar National Catholic Hospital in Yangon

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) announced publicly on 17 January 2021 that all members of the conference unanimously agreed to open Myanmar National Catholic Hospital in Than Lyn, Yangon during their virtual annual meeting which was held from 12 to 15 January 2021.

 

According the statement, CBCM is planning to convert the unused and sealed Catholic Major Seminary, located at Than Lynn, which was sealed by the previous military government in about 2002 under Apostolic Administrator of Yangon, Bishop Sotero Phamaw and was recently regained from government in 2020, to Myanmar National Catholic Hospital.

Currently as part of CBCM contribution to Myanmar government and citizen, CBCM allows the seminary campus making service for containment and treatment center of Covid-19 pandemic, directly administered by and for Yangon Regional Government.

 

According to CBCM statistics, there are (15) Catholic dioceses and the Catholic Christians population in Myanmar is about 700,000. After the visit of Pope Francis to Myanmar in November 27-30, 2017, Myanmar people and government came to have an ample awareness and recognition on Catholic Christianity around the world and in Myanmar. As the visit’ impacts, a warm relationship between Catholic Church in Myanmar and government has been cementing. Moreover, Myanmar military leaders also have a regular visit to Cardinal Charles Bo, the president of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar as well as the Archbishop of Yangon and have make financial and material donations to Catholic dioceses and Religious congregation.
